50 Cent In Get Rich Or Die Tryin

Based on rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson’s real life, Get Rich or Die Tryin' projects Jackson and his film counterpart Marcus as hustlers transforming their lives upside down.

The movie begins with the depiction of Jackson’s mother ‘s murder, his involvement in drug dealing at a very tender age and then incidents of his being shot 9 times and his survival through them all. Thus, the movie shows his underground rap success way before takeover of the top 40s. The only discrepancy in the depiction and real life situation is that 50 Cent was signed with a record deal just before he was shot. He is shown in the movie as a man whose life is an open book, rendered taintless by nirvana, but actually 50 Cent has been controversial with sparks of venomous rebellion pointing to lack of conscientious grounding.

Jackson executes his lines with taciturn matter-of-factness to put it politely. His inexpressive face (more of a stiff upper lip type) and his babbling of are compensated by his charismatic presence and gift for timing along with his ability to carry the story forward.

If there is something wrong in the movie then its Get Rich or Die Tryin's script, which staggers repeatedly with proverbs that are haphazardly blurted out by characters. The script, written by Terrence Winter, is weak.

To sum it up Get Rich or Die Tryin’ does a job of telling Jackson’s compelling story that can’t be ignored. For a fan of hip-hop heroism, it’s a fine movie even though utterly lacking in depth and ingenuity. Enjoy and get tattooed.
